Hi, there.  I don't see anything wrong with giving your wife a gift even if you're separated.  If you want a reconciliation, anything you do to show your love would be helpful.  The other thing I would suggest is that you both go to a couples therapist.  I have a son who is in the same boat as you and I wish to God he and his wife would go, but they're both too stubborn and angry, which is sad, especially since they have a beautiful son who is feeling the effects.  You need to find out how willing your wife is to mend things and you will have to make sure that you NEVER get violent with her again - that is a definite deal breaker.  If nothing else, get help for that because if your wife can't trust you, she won't come back.  Show her that you mean it by getting some help.

I wish you the best and hope you can come to a happy resolution for both of you.

It doesn't seem as though the problem, here, is either depression or knowing if it's appropriate to give your wife a gift.

Whether or not you're "truly sincerely sorry" and your "life not complete without her" changes nothing and is irrelevant, to anyone other than you, unless you act on it, get help controlling your anger and learn to deal with conflict, without "getting physical". If you do, I suspect that'd be the best gift you could give your wife. If you don't, the next best would be a divorce.

I'm assuming it was you who "got physical" and not your wife. If that assumption's incorrect, I apologize and suggest you both get help.
