Q: Im depressed, and when i talk to my parents, they say i just want attention. what should i do?

I think that the depression might be related to my schizofrenia, and my mom doesnt believe me. i dont know what to do. How can i get her to recognize it??

Lysterias,

Are you being treated for shcizophrenia? If so, talk to that doctor about your possible deression and how to treat it, then have him or her tal to your mom.

If you're not being treated, you need to be. Talk to a school counselor, minister, or family friend you trust, and ask them to talk to your mom with you.

I agree with Teri - go talk to your doctor and I'm sure s/he will help you, not just with your depression, but with talking to your parents.

Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone.  I have a very good friend who has both schizophrenia and depression.  He's getting treated and doing well.  Don't lose hope and keep talking - to your doctor, friends or supportive places like HealthCentral or other online communities. Mental illness isn't about wanting attention - it's very real.  I have rheumatoid arthritis and use a wheelchair - saying you just want attention is the same as saying I use a wheelchair because I want attention.  Your disease is just as real as mine.  You know that and I'm sure that eventually, your parents will realize this, too.

Hi Lysterias,

It's unfortunate that your parents are not listening to you and that could be from many other circumstances. If you show them the responses you are getting here that could help you. Let me give you some links to information that will also help.

There is a great overview of what it means to be diagnosed with depression here. There is a very informative section here for when you have just been diagnosed, including myths debunked, and a section that gives you specific questions to ask your doctor. You can read about the symptoms of depression here, medications commonly prescribed here, and current treatments that are being used here.

You said you were schizophrenic and I am assuming you're being treated for schizophrenia. Here is some information that might help you when speaking to your doctor about this. Here is the overview about schizophrenia, you can check symptoms here, and look up medications you are being prescribed here. It is possible that your medications for the schizophrenia are part of the reason you are feeling depressed. You can also read about treatments here and in particular the section about family support. If you share this information with your mom, you might find her a little more open and willing to help.

Hopefully this will give you something to start with. Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
