toni,

According the FDA, one company has approval for and is marketing venlafaxine hydrochloride, extended release tablets. The final FDA approval was on May 20, 2008. The manufacturer is Osmotica Pharmaceuticals, and the extended release tablets come in 27,5, 75, 150, and 225 mg dosages.

This may be somewhat different from the 24-hour Effexor XR capsules, but it's worth asking your doctor about.

According to Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effexor#Generic ), regular venlafaxine (the generic form of Effexor) is now available in the United States. The XR form will not be available as generic until 2010. Both the regular and the XR form are available as generics in Canada and in India.

So if the cost of Effexor XR is becoming prohibitive to you and you're willing to take multiple doses during the day (the thing you don't have to do with the XR), you can get the non-XR version in generic form, anyway.
