Jan,

I'm so sorry to read about your situation.

Unfortunately, unless there are some extenuating circumstances, your son will have to seek help for himself because of his age. At 26, he's legally an adult, and you cannot authorize care for him unless you have power of attorney for him or have been declared his guardian despite his age.

If you think he's a danger to himself, you can talk to local law enforcement to see what you can do.

If you have a good relationship with your doctor, discuss the situation with him or her. He or she will have a better idea of what services are available in your area and how to access them. You might also be able to get this kind of information from a minister if you're a member of a church. Also, check with your local health department. They're good sources of information.

I wish I had more suggestions to offer. It's so difficult to actually do anything when a child is legally an adult. Maybe someone else will come along with additional suggestions for you.

Good luck,

Teri
