Q: Which antidepressants are least likely to elevate intra optic eye pressure?

Several years ago, Itook Effexor for 6 months, and tolerated fairly well, except for severe constipation and insomnia.  After being taken off HRT abruptly in '02, Effexor had an agitating effect.  PCP recently prescribed Cymbalta 40, but by evening I was extremeliy agitated.  My PCP has now given me Pristiq 50.  If I previously had been able to tolerate Effexor, would I now be able to tolerate Pristiq? I have a concern about eye pressure, and Pristiq has warnings about eye problems.  Although I do not have glaucoma, I have elevated IOP, in the safe range, but my eye doctor has prescribed Xalatan.  I need to take some type of antidepressant for insomnia/anxiety, and need to know which would be most effective and safest for my eye pressure issue.  Would much appreciated advice, as I am much in need of an effective medication.

Hi,

I too have had a problem with anxiety and not being able to sleep.  I was on Welbutrin and Celexa.  I stopped taking those medications and asked my psych to put me on Klonopin.  My daughter takes Klonopin for her anxiety and it has helped her tremendously to cope and to be able to sleep at night.  I started taking the Klonopin, starting out with a lesser dose than what my doctor had prescribed (I know it is a strong drug and didn't want to go overboard knowing that I could always increase my dosage if I found it wasn't working).  I found that it was too strong.  I cut it down even more and found a level that helps me not to be so anxious during the day.  I now can sleep at night.  One night I didn't take it before bed and couldn't sleep.  I was very surprised because I didn't realize just how much the Klonopin helped me to sleep.  To me this medication has been better than any antidepressant I have ever taken.

I don't know if Klonopin would help you but it might be worth your while to talk to your doctor about it.
