Q: Can I stop taking celexa 20mg after 2 days?

Can I stop taking Celexa 20mg after being on it for 2 days. I have read alot about antidepressants and I do not want to take them. I am taking it for mild depression.

Thanks,

Diane G.

Hi, Diane -

I take it you received a prescription for the Celexa, and a doctor should explain what the potential side effects are, as well as the primary intended effects. If the MD doesn't, it's good to get in the habit of asking directly about this - as well as the length of time the drug takes to get throughout your system so that it begins to do what it's supposed to do. Withdrawal times vary with the drug since each takes a certain amount of time to get out of the bloodstream completely. That's something you should always consult a doctor about since sudden stopping can lead to harsh reactions.

If your doctor refuses to give you the respect you deserve to explain all this, you should try to find a different one. I know people in health plans or relying on clinics don't always have much choice, but you should get thorough advice about meds before agreeing to take any.

Hi, Diane.  It probably wouldn't hurt anything to stop taking it after only a couple of days, but I hope you will also talk with your doctor about this.  Yes, there are possible side effects with any drug, but some people have no problems with them and feel so much better.  Maybe if Celexa doesn't work, you can try something else.  Just be sure your doctor knows that you've stopped taking it.  Thanks for writing in.

Hello Diane

The internet can be great but it should not be used to get some quick medical questions.

I have taken in the last 9 years anti-depressant on and off depending on how I was feeling. The last type was Celexa 20mg once per day about 2 years ago.

The important thing is that I received therapy also at the same time. If this is not possible for economic reasons you may want to find group therapy and or a support group.I know that in my case it was very helpful.

If you have serious doubt  only after 2 day, it would be wise to discuss this with a professional.

Think positive.
