Q: I have every symptom of mercury poisoning but tests show i am ok. So i started antidepressants 2 years ago and no change. I sleep like a log 10 hrs a day (8hrs + naps) 11 years whitecollarjob HELP?!

*countless dr visits

*demoted at work and was on probation (due to performance due to memory loss and cognitive decline- must visualize words before...I...Can...Say....Them)

*only feel like myself once per week after 12 hours sleep +4 red bull drinks.  Wears off in 2-3 hours.

Hi there

 

When you say "no change" what do you mean?  Were you tired like this before the antidepressants?  What made you think that mercury poisoning was a suspicion?

 

Do you do shift work at all?  Or do you work normal hours?

 

What tests have your doctors performed?  Have they looked at your thyroid functioning?  Diabetes?  Chronic fatigue syndrome?  ADHD? Celiac disease?  Food allergies? 

 

Are you having any other symptoms?  Dizziness, feeling off balance, difficulty talking or weakness in your limbs?

 

Judy is very correct...we are not doctors here.

 

But I do think you need to write up a log of your symptoms and when they occur to take to your doctor so that they have something concrete to go on.

 

When I was having mystery symptoms I wrote them all down for several months and I am convinced this is what helped me to be diagnosed within a short time frame for Multiple Sclerosis. 

 

You need to be assertive and persistent to get to the root cause of what is causing your particular symptoms.

By "no change" i mean i still have sleepiness ALL day, and nap attacks where i MUST sleep. Even if friends, family are over or it is my day off,etc. I 've stayed on the meds since i have read it is a trial and error process, like Judy said sone meds make things worse. I also now know i suffered from general anxiety my whole life. Now i don't go to work everyday worrying about being fired, so i can be more effective in that regard. I initially thought i had some poisoning because in a couple days timeframe i went from " me" to having NO memory, no thinking, plus muscle and joint pain, and the super mega need for sleep and ringing in ears. Then i recently red about the colitis and i do have a lot of mucus in stool. Eiher way i just started a new dr at cleveland clinic. I can't list all the tests we've done but the sleep study was kinda funny. I know they are looking for specific things but a sleep study for me is like going to the great lakes for a glass of water! I hear what you are saying about writing down sypoms and things tried so far, but since there is no definative test for CFS, well let's just say, it's been really difficult to deal with all the syptoms above and try to hold my job, and be a father and husband, and if a doctor thinks the problem is psycosomatic to start with, i can almost see "hypochondriac" in their eyes when i do take a list of previous test results and symptoms and they see that i've jumped from dr to dr when we get noWhere except "are you Talking to someone" My awesome wife now accompanys me to dr visits to help on that front. I never knew this downward spiral could exist! You loose your cognitive ability and then can't work effectivly, then get demoted which validates anxiety about performance, then doctors say Cfs has no cure or test, this then start the cycle ovet again. I have endoscope and colonoscopy coming up - i ' ll share anything that might help others. Reply

right on, everything that MerelyMe said.  

 

I once wrote a log for myself - every day I wrote down about a dozen things, like amount of exercise, coffee, alcohol, bedtime, wake time, etc.  I think  I just had an old  calendar around and I found a month shaped like the current month and wrote in the squares.   More important to write down everything than how you do it.   This was for more than a month.  

 

Afterward (with a spreadsheet) I  figured out all sorts of  things  I couldn't have without, like, coffee improves my depression and my sleep (I thought it was bad for me!) and surprise, exercise does too.  YMMV.

We aren't medical professionals here, so can't really give you advice about these kinds of issues, but it sounds like you should be either talking to your doctor or getting another opinion about your medications.  If nothing has changed in two years, you should ask why you are still being prescribed these drugs.  Have you had tests for any other types of illnesses or conditions?  A lot of people sleep a lot when they're depressed and sometimes, an antidepressant can make a person feel worse if it's not the right drug for them.  I had similar problems to yours when I was taking Seroquel and I had to stop taking it because I couldn't really function and almost got fired.  In retrospect, that was probably not what I needed.
