Q: What is the best way for a psychologist to prescribe the "correct" medication for an individual?

I'm 31 yrs. old, bipolar 2, battle severe anxiety disorder, and have ADHD. I haven't had any success with many kinds of medication and am terrified that I will never find medication that balances things out for me. I am currently taking Adderall XR, Lexapro and Seroquel. I know individuals who have had success with at least one of these but also have the realization that individuals have different chemical makeups. Are there any tests that a clinic can perform that will indicate levels of something in my body enabling a doctor to better prescribe medication for me?

I feel as though psychologists prescribe mediation in a fashion that mimics an "educated guess."

There is a blood test that can be done to measure the amount of seritonin in the blood. But it is generally disregarded since it doesnt actually tell anyone how much is in the brain. Any GP can perform this test and send it to a lab.

It is understandable your fear/worries. The best that you can do is keep communicating to your Dr these concerns.  Keep pushing for answers and advice. Seek out second opinions. Be informed.
