One of the problems with knowing the long-term effects of medications is that funding isn't available to have long-range trials and data collection.
One of the biggest concerns with long-term use of opioids such as OxyContin is building a tolerance to it, which makes it less effective for pain relief. Also, many people are concerned about pain control if they have to have surger or something else adds to their pain relief needs.
