Q: My teenage son is depressed, and is going to college in a week. Will he snap out of it?

My 18 year old son has ADHD, and Asperger's Syndrome.  He is going away to college (2-3 hours) in a week and a half.  He gets very angry when I tell him to eat a meal.  He won't leave his room.  He is on the computer, video games, and telephone with his girlfriend 24/7.  This is his first relationship ever.  He's never met her, they met online.

He is still on meds, but the nighttime meds he takes, he doesn't take them if he going to be up for hours and hours.

We had his last group counseling (social skiills class) session yesterday.  We have seen this incredible therapist approximately once a week, for the last 4-5 years.

It is very hard for me to back off on this.  If my husband talks to him, he either takes action, or talks to him calmly. (usually)

Today is August 8, and August 15, he has an orientation at his college for the day.  August 18, he goes for good.

Is he going to behave differently when he is no longer living with me?  I have bipolar, and this behavior "trip" he is doing on me is driving me crazy!

You might want to contact AHEADD (Achieving in Higher Education with Autism/Developmental Disabilities). Even if they don't have a branch in your area, they might have some suggestions.

I googled "teenage son aspergers college" and found your post from August.  I can totally relate...we are dealing with a very similar situation with our 18 year old son although he doesn't start college until next fall.  I'd love to talk with you and share stories and possibly help each other with strategies, etc.
