Q: What can I give my daughter for Asperger's Syndrome to reduce anxiety, yelling, & arguing

My daughter is 16 years old and has a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome or PDD NOS.

She has some learning disabilities and doesn't like to do her homework. She will often

argue and yell at me about doing an assignment for longer than it would actually take

to just go the assignment. She is very stubborn and it is very difficult to get her to stop

talking about a subject or end a discussion.

Hey there...

This is a really good question.  My youngest son is on the spectrum...he has more straight up autism though.  I know that homework is almost always a struggle for a kid who is on the spectrum.  There are as many ways to deal with this issue as there are books about Asperger's syndrome...and there are many.  The first way to deal with things is behaviorally.

Here is a really good article about how to address the homework issue with a child who has Aspergers.

Things like having a set routine, breaking down assignments into manageble parts, and incorporating your child's interests can help.  I would think too...a logical explanation of why they are learning the particular topic can help motivate.

I always like to approach things with behavioral modifications first.

Mother to mother though...here is the decision that I made some months ago.  My son is taking prozac now...and it has been a god send.  It is going to work very differently on different people.  I took it and I had bad side effects (I will discuss this in another post).  But for my son...it stopped his crying and so many of his phobias.  I feel medication should be the last resort after other things have been tried and exhausted.

I know it ain't easy.  I sure hope things get better for you and your daughter.  Nice to meet you and I hope you come back to let us know how things are going.
