Q: I take amitriptyline for migraine prevention; could it & toprol-xl for bp be reason for wt.gain?

I take toprol for genetic induced high bp and to help prevent migraines; my MD also gave me amitriptyline as a migraine preventative; Since I started on these meds i have gained over 20 lbs in the past 15 mos.  I have NEVER gained wt. before; i exercise and walk 2+ miles daily I do not lead a sedentary lifestyle; I eat fresh fruits/vegies; drink tea etc. YET I still continue to gain weight which is foreign to me and I don't like it.  Could the toprol and the amitriptyline be responsible for the fact that my metabolism came to a total standstill?  Any other ideas on meds for migraine prevention?  I have went down to about  1 migraine/month so it has helped but this wt. gain is not helping.

Hi Caro!

I do have some experience with taking amitrypyline but for depression and in my experience I did not gain weight but I am just one person.  Everyone is going to be different.

I do not know about the interactions between these two drugs you are taking and I am going to refer you on over to the Migraine site where the experts there are going to have more knowledge and experience with these medications and specifically to treat migraines.  Here is the link to our Migraine site.

In addition my best suggestion is to speak with your doctor to ask what side effects these meds have and specifically pertaining to weight gain.

I wish you the best of luck...I know how frustrating it must be to try to figure out the cause for sudden weight gain.  Let us know what happens.
