Q: my doctor suggested i take an antidepressant during my hep c treatment, but i am not depressed

i have hep c type 1A, i am going to be taking ribavirin {sp} daily, and taking once weekly injections for 48 weeks, i've been told that i will experience flu like symptoms aprox. 24 hours after the injections, and the symptoms will last aprox. 24 hours. so basically i will have the flu once a week for 48 weeks. she said some patients get severely depressed, and some suicidal, but i am not a depressed or negative minded person.

they gave me lexapro, and i am just wondering if i really need it.

Hi Sherry

Sorry to hear you have Hep C. Good luck with the treatment, I hope it works for you!!!

Sherry, doctors that I have met, do not just hand out Lexapro.

My experience was this. My husband has Hep C. When he was going to start the treatments, the doctor said there was a chance he could get depressed. I wish, he had given my husband Lexapro. He did not. Its a long story but to make it as short as I can, we were married 20 years at the time, we had the best marriage of any one I knew. My husband is a up beat person who never had depression either. Hind, site is 20 20. If we only knew how depressed he would get. His treatments have all failed and he still, has active hep c. Every one we know except one lady, did well with the treatment. After 2 years, we seperated. I did not know he changed because of this treatment, but it was the treatments that changed his and my life. THANK GOD, WE ARE NOW BACK TOGETHER AND JUST HAD OUR 25TH WEDDING ANNV. We are now $10,000.00 more in debt for the devorce papers, he filed, but we are together again. I feel, you have nothing to lose by taking the med, and it may stop you from a very , bad depression. I am not a doctor, only a 53 yr old women with my own life experiences. Good Luck with the treatment!
