Q: How do I wean my 12 yr old daughter of prozac 20? I think its making her worse.

She started cutting herself at age 11. I took her to counselor and psychiatrist in our county. Counselor helped some but psychiatrist was a quack with no bedside manner or personality. Just kept wanting to change her meds or up them. I put a stop to her increasing cuz my daughter was like a zombie that didnt care about anything.

she is now on prozac 20 and was fine all summer and now its all coming back. school started and kids bullying her all over again. Calling her emo etc. she is now hard to control and has anger so bad. I have been trying to find help for her but unfortunately I dont have the money for GREAT help. I am at my withs end on what to do.  please help

Hi there

I do agree with Judy...I think from what you are telling us...the Prozac is probably the least of your worries.  It just may be the thing which is helping her to not be even worse.  What does your daughter say about the Prozac?

It sounds like she is having some behavioral issues in addition to her mood?  Is there any help from the school?  Does your daughter have any sort of diagnosis?

My son is thirteen, has autism, and is taking Prozac.  It does not take away his behavioral issues by any stretch of the imagination.  But it does help him to cope with his mood problems and that is all the pill is really expected to do.  The other stuff...you have to work on continually.

If you feel like the Prozac has some bad side effects...do discuss this with the doctor.

Tell us more specifics about your situation and maybe we can provide...more detailed suggestions.  Know that nobody here is a therapist, however.

I hope things get better for you both.  Hang in there.

Hi, there.  My oldest son was having a lot of problems like this when he was 12.  I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that the Prozac is making her worse - it could be that she needs more or a different medication and though you said there have been some changes made, were they for a long enough period of time that you could determine whether or not they were really working?  Are you seeing a psychiatrist through your county?  I think you have a right to ask for someone different and if you're not satisfied, go to the management of the clinic and demand some attention and a different doctor.  If your doctor is at a county clinic, he does report to somebody.  My younger son had a visit with a quack once, only once, and I made a complaint and it was listened to.  He was on Medicare so I was able to find another doctor somewhere else, but I think sometimes we just put up with whoever we get because we think we have to.  You don't. Hopefully, your daughter is still seeing a therapist - does he/she have any suggestions about this?

I guess I'd just be a little nervous about taking my child off a medication without a doctor's supervision.  It's obvious you don't trust the doctor, so it's important that you try another one.  I know it's frustrating - I've been there several times - but you know you want to do whatever it takes to get the right help for your daughter.

Good luck with this and let us know how it's going.

My recomendation would be for your daughter to find a counselor. Someone that she can talk to without feeling that you are trying to manipulate her. yes she can do this on her own she just needs to understand how beneficial it is to have someone to talk to, someone that can help you think things thru, someone to help her achieve her goals.

And always let her know that you will listen to her. And give her lots of hugs.

Pat
