Q: what can I expect from my stay at the clinic?

My worst fear has come true, I am being admitted to a psychiatric clinic for my depression. The duration of the stay will be three weeks. I am freaking out a little bit. What should I expect from my stay there?

Hi Jane

Are you admitting yourself voluntarily?  Or has your doctor told you that you must go because they fear for your safety?

Every hospital and clinic can be a different experience.  Did they give you any information on your particular clinic?

Do you have a friend or family member who can help you to get there and to be your advocate?  This would be a good idea to go with someone.

I had worked in the mental health field for some time and I also have a mom who has schizophrenia so I have definitely seen what it can be like.  And it isn't all bad.  Mostly they will have a very scheduled time for you...when you eat...when you participate in therapy.  Some therapy sessions will be individualized and some will be group sessions with other patients.  They will probably monitor your medication there.

The whole goal is for you to get better.

I know they do monitor which items you can bring with you as in no glass...so no mirrors...no razors...no files...things like that.

I know that this is traumatic and I can only imagine that you feel frightened but...this time can also help you.  I truly hope your experience is a good one.

Please let us know if you have more questions...I will do my best to answer them.

My thoughts are with you.

Hi Merely Me,

Thank you so much for your kind answer. At this time I am admitting myself semi voluntary. The psychiatrist told me that it would be now or in a short period of time. My psychologist also recommended this option. It is a private clinic in Cape Town, and I dont have that much info about the clinic, which makes it a bit worse. Another thing is that this is something I am doing on my own, as my family lives 1500km away, and friends are all working at the moment (I am still a student). I am going in tomorrow, still a bit scared. I really appreciate the answer you have provided me with!
