Q: taking celexa and dr put me on welbution to counteract weight gain

I have been on celexa for three months and it helps me alot. Problem is it made me put 20 lbs on. My dr perscribed me welbutrion in addition to counteract weight gain. Anyone know if this works? Also been taking the welbutrin for a week and it gives me headache and makes me tired. Does this go away?

Wellbutrin is actually prescribed as a weight control drug. It's been found in comparative drug studies to be just as effective for this purpose as more familiar weight-control medications. It's also known as one of the antidepressants that does not cause weight gain as a side effect - many others that act in a different way, like celexa, may lead to weight gain as a possible side effect, as has happened to you.

Like Judy, I haven't heard that wellbutrin would stop the weight gain caused by another antidepressant. It's usually prescribed if a person's depression isn't responding well to celexa, or another drug of that class. Combining the two often leads to better relief from depression. It's important to keep track of problems like headache, but I'd give the drug combination a little more time to work - it usually takes a few weeks before these reach a level in the blood that can affect depression.

I'm puzzled, though, about adding wellbutrin if celexa was already taking care of depression. You might want to get a second opinion - especially if your doctor is not a psychiatrist but a primary care provider. Psychiatrists have much more training and experience with these drugs.

We're not doctors here, but can only talk from our own experience.  I don't know if the Wellbutrin will counteract weight gain - some people do lose weight while taking it and it's generally considered an energizing antidepressant.  What you're experiencing could very well go away in time.  As for weight gain, I have to tell you that my son is on Abilify, which made him gain weight, and is also on Wellbutrin, so it hasn't seemed to help at all with that.  I've been on Wellbutrin myself for years and it hasn't killed my appetite, either - I wish it would.

You should discuss your side effects with your doctor if they become intolerable or go on for several weeks and then figure out if you're getting any benefit from it.  I hope it works for you.  On the other hand, if Celexa has helped you a lot, maybe 20 lbs. might be worth it.

Hope that was of some help - thanks for your question.
