Q: Pre-teen Support

I have a 12 year old daughter who just started treatment for depression. I'm trying to find some support and education for her - besides her counselor. The options for a pre-teen/teen seem remarkably small. I was wondering if this site would be appropriate or if there are other teen websites like this available that are good?

Hello

You are a really good mom in helping your daughter in this way.  Wanted to let you know that we have a depression support group forum here on Health Central and you may find it here.

There is another on-line support group specifically for teens called Teen Moods which you may find here.

Also the previous commenter was correct in saying that there are many support groups on-line for teens.  You just have to do a bit of investigating.

Hope this helps.  If you have any more questions please let us know.

The Oregon Center for Applied Science has created a fun and educational computer program to help adolescents learn about and prevent depression. For this research study we need teens to review the program and tell us what they think about it.

 What will I be doing?
You will view an interactive computer program online. The program will teach you skills and show you how to relate mood, activities, and thoughts.

How long will it take?
The program takes about 30 minutes a week for 6 weeks. You will be asked to do several phone interviews and online surveys so that we can assess the effectiveness of this depression prevention program. Total participation time would be about 5 hours and participants will receive $75 for their participation.

What do I get out of it?
You may learn skills to help you feel better more of the time. You will be helping others by helping us make a better program for them. You will get up to $75 for participating.

How do I sign up? Call us toll-free at 1-866-822-0226.

This research study is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health
