Q: What's the difference between Lexapro and Celexa? Is generic citalopram a good option?

From what I've read, both are SSRI's, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and though they are similar chemically, they are different and not interchangeable. The example I saw was both hands looking similar but putting one on top of the other, showed the differences.

 

Lexapro, Escitalopram, is not available as a generic.

Celexa, is. Citalopram is it's generic.

 

Generics are usually cheaper than the name brands, but again, your doctor may see a need for one over the other.You should ask your doctor any questions you have about the differences between them and which is for your particular symptoms.
