Q: No appetite and depressed - is it likely a hypothyroid condition? Recommend a doctor.

My son has no appetite, is often depressed and is extremely thin and tall. Is it likely a hypothyroid condition? Is there a doctor in Salt Lake that you would recommend?

Hi Rick,

From my perspective, your family doctor should be perfectly able to rule in (or out) the most common physical conditions by running some blood tests. Whether the problem is physical or psychological, any doctor will begin the process of diagnosis by ruling out the physical first.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm stating the obvious but depression can be an effect of a physical condition or an issue in its own right. In my experience diagnosis around depression is nearly always a process of elimination rather than a snap decision. A number of physical conditions can mimic psychological conditions, hence the need to rule them out.
