Q: Depression from forced to stop smoking

I have all the withdrawal symptoms: nervous stomach, headache, crying jags, cravings, moody etc.  My doctor put me on Wellbutrin XL.  I have already stopped smoking for 3 months before he put me on this drug and this drug also treats depression, but it isn't helping.  I feel worse.  Should I try another medication or just stop all drugs and tough it out?

This is q question that you should talk to your doctor about. Quitting smoking is very difficult and most antidepressants will actually make you want to smoke more. Being 3 months into it you should not be feeling the cravings anymore. I quit for 1 year, started on cymbalta and restarted smoking soon after. I am not a professional, but sometimes its necessary to think outside the box and look at issues that might be causing your depression. Some ideas,

Vit b12 deficiency.

Celiac, gluten-intolerance. There are more these are the only ones I am dealing with.

Proper diet absorbtion plays a big role in mood stability. Some people go thru there whole lives not finding out till its too late. It doesnt mean their life is shortened in any way.

Talk to your doctor about your options. Welbutrin can take up to 90 days to take effect.

Hope this helps,

Pat

P.S. Great job on the No Smoking!

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your input on my problem.  The reason I was forced to stop smoking (after 50 years) was because I had to have a stent put in my heart and I was "scared" into not smoking anymore.  I think the only reason he put me on Wellbutrin was because I told him that I did not feel like doing anything and had withdrawal symptoms.  So if what you are saying is true, this should start to work soon.  I've been on it for 5 weeks.  He is starting to wean me off them starting this week.  I'm taking them everyday for one week and then one every other day for one week.   Then stop.  Maybe this if all my problems.  I hope so.
