Q: Pre-teen girl with depression symptoms

My 11 yr old daughter has all the classic signs of depression & Im sick with worry. She cries all the time, very quiet & withdrawn, bursts of anger & outbursts, slams doors, doesnt take rejection well, or critisicm, frequent aches & pains, tries to fight the sadness & smile, but it comes back with a vengeance.. She is also quite small for her age, and Im not sure if this is effecting her self image..I am a mom of five, and on medicaid, and cannot seem to find anyone to help her with my insurance...I live in the Greenville,SC area, and would be willing to travel if I have to. If anyone can help me find a Therapist in my area, I would be very grateful. I also would like to know how safe Prozac is for children this young..Thank you for any help or answers..

Hello, Italianmom.  I'm sorry your daughter is going through this and I know how worried you must feel - my older son was 12 when we first got him help.  It's good that you are recognizing something is not right and are not afraid to look for help.  This link will take you to a sharepost by one of our experts, Merely Me, which talks about how to find help when you don't have insurance or money and I believe you might find some useful information here.  Your daughter is lucky to have you, a mother who is concerned and cares about helping her feel better.  There are a lot of parents who would rather pretend there isn't a problem and blow it off.  I'm sure you've tried talking to her and she probably doesn't want you to worry and maybe she doesn't even know what's wrong.  If nothing else, perhaps a counselor at school could be of assistance or could refer you to someone for more help.  I hope this helps and if you need any more information or support, you can always come back to this site.  I sincerely hope you can find the help for her that you need.

I found this ad for a counselor in your area on craigslist.

http://greenville.craigslist.org/lss/1297208586.html

I found a really good counselor that way and she wasnt expensive.

Google can be a useful tool also, just use words like:

child counseling+greensville, s.c

you can also talk to her doctor about the issues and get a referal.
