Q: Can we get help for our son's depression ?

I have a son who is now 20 years old,he had a nervous break down when he was 13,it happened just after we moved house although we still stayed in the same town.
He has seen physiologists and a physiatrist when he was younger which seemed to have little effect.
The physiatrist said it his depression was passed down from his father who also suffered terribly with depression as a young man,my son was prescribed medication which he refused to take and he also stopped the help he was receiving.
Recently he had a worse than usual bout of depression and he now gets very angry threatening to harm family members.
We have tried talking to him in the hope that he will get medical help for his condition but he refuses.
Is there anything we can do as parents to get the help for him that he so desperatly needs ?
I am worried for the safety of my other children and also worried for my own safety if he should carry out the threats he makes during these bouts of anger.

Hey there

It does concern me that you are saying that your son is making threats to harm others.  I think you need to take these threats seriously and call your local mental health agency.  if you or other family members are in immediate danger you should call 911.

If a person is either suicidal or threatening harm to others this is a reason to get some help.  You cannot handle this alone.  Please do call someone (your local mental hospital) and explain the situation.  Better safe than sorry.

Please let us know what happens.

Oh how scary, My 19 year old son was raised by my parents and he definately shows all the signs of bi-polar and has been told by his dr. I have seen a quite a few episodes and my mom even had a phsy. apt. for him and he just refuses to go, and you cant make them, sadly, he is also a very angry person and makes threats as well and even smokes pot in my moms house, they have gave him everything and he treats my parents so badly, but unfortunetly he has to be the one to reach out since he id an adult. Good Luck, cause I know how kids can be.

Oh dear. I was in a similiar experience, except my brother, who was diagnosed with depression and was unwillling to go to see a therapist or physiatrist, today threatened me to shut up or else and threw a fork at my arm, which is now bleeding. He's been doing threatening things like randomly chopping the chopboard with a knife too. I Hate Him So Much. My parents are NOT taking any action cause he doesn't want to go see a therapist and they don't want to give him anti depressants because they have side effects. Way to go.
