Hi, Jessie. Your friends are not medical professionals. Antidepressants won't change your personality per se, but they will make you feel better if they work like they should. Be sure that you talk about all your concerns with the doctor. Your doctor will monitor how you're doing very closely in the beginning and watch for any side effects and to make sure the drug is doing what it's supposed to. Or, you may not end up on medication at all, perhaps just talk therapy. Don't let your friends scare you. There are a lot of cautions about young people taking antidepressants and they've probably heard some bad stories, but you have to listen to the doctor and work with him/her to make sure things go well.
I hope you're soon feeling better!
