Q: How do i cope withDepression triggered by social ineptness and Masters program

I have been struggling through my worst bout of depression for the last 6 weeks that has been triggered by social rejection and doubt of my abilities in completing my masters program.  I have trouble communicating with others that leeds to my lack of friends.  How do I cope with my depression while trying to endure the triggers I feel are keeping me from getting better and attributing to my depression.

Hi there

I can relate to this somewhat.  I struggled too with these things when I was getting my Master's degrees as well.

The first thing that is going to help is to seek out a therapist.  I had a wonderful therapist during those years of going through getting my education and I just would not have survived without that help.  There is also antidepressant treatment if you are feeling that you are just unable to cope.

Support groups can help immensely...in person or on-line.  You can always come here and write out your vents or fears about what is currently going on in your life.

So it seems your biggest stressors are the social issues and the program itself?  If you could tell us specifically which aspects stress you out the most or...which interactions are hardest...we could try to give more detailed suggestions.  Remember that we are a support system here and as such...we cannot replace a therapist.

I can tell you from experience that it is very hard to undergo the pressure of school and also suffer from depression.  I remember one day specifically where I was sobbing...but had a paper due...and I am sitting in my living room with a fan of papers around me...and just crying.  The responsibility of school always helped me in a lot of ways but...the stress of it did add to my depression at times.

Tell us about the social rejection part...is this from peers?  or teachers?  or...?  I think it helps to be around people who understand and who are supportive.  I know these people are hard to find but believe me...they are out there.  Remember that you are a good and worthy person...please don't allow anyone to take away your self worth.

You are going to get through this...

Please come back to tell us more...we want to hear from you.

The teachers in the program are great so there is no rejection there it is mostly by my peers.  I am married with a daughter so I have support there but I have trouble connected with other students and the people at my church because of what I feel is my poor communication skills.  It seems when everyone else communicates they can talk elequently and many sentences at a time.  I have trouble thinking what to say and only one sentence at a time unless it is something I really know about.  It isn't only because I am shy because when I want to talk I still have trouble. I also have a lot of anxiety in group settings.  I also have trouble following anything that includes more a couple of steps and a horrible sense of direction.  All of these things attribute to my depression.  I was diagnosed with Bipolar depression at 15 but have not had a manic episode since just severe depression and anxiety.  I am on lithium 900 mg a day, lexapro 10mg a day, and clonopin 1/2 miligram 2X a day.
