Q: My insurance only covers generics but I know the brand name Prozac works better for me?

I've been on both fluoxetine and Prozac. I had to stop taking the Prozac and go on fluoxetine because I couldn't afford the price. Prozac is almost $400 a month. I'm disabled, but still don't qualify for any assistance because of my husband's job. Can anyone help me?

Lisa,

Some insurance companies will cover brand name meds if your doctor sends them a letter explaining that you need them. Have you tried that?

There is a lot of discussion on the net as to whether or not fluoxetine(the generic) and Prozac do the same thing. That is aside the subject. You need to find something generic that works for you or find a husband with better insurance(just kidding, lol).

You can also check with Eli Liliies Patient assist program and see if you qualify for free or reduced meds at this site:

Good luck,
