Due to depression from Progesterone and surgery I have to start Prozac. I'm scared.

  • I had an endometrial ablation in October and had to start on 5mg Norethindrone pills day 1-10 of the month. Since April I've been going through major depression, feelings of worthlessness, a "who cares" attitude and etc. My doc has prescribed Prozac for me to be taken every day. She also wants me to cut the Norethindrone dose to 2.5 mg days 1-10 to see if that will be better for my body. I was off it for a month and am starting back up in July. I'm not to start the Prozac until I see what happens with the cut dose of Norethindrone. My mom and my mom in law are asking me to not start the Prozac due to all the suicide comments and etc. I'm not sure what to do. Do you have suggestions for me. Once I do start the Prozac I have to stay on it for 6 months as required by my OB/GYN doc. I would like your help on this. thanks

There are, surprisingly, a substantial number of medications that can cause suicidal thoughts. Not all of them are antidepressants. Very simply, if you start having suicidal thoughts, call your doctor right away. I believe that this side effect is relatively rare, though. I was on Prozac myself for a year and never had suicidal thoughts.

Hi, I took prozac for 14 years without any bad side effects, it worked great! The only thing was some nausea for a week or so, but not bad. I had to switch to cymbalta because the prozac just quit working after that long of time on it. I wish I could take it again. Cymbalta has side effects, cannot be late in taking it, and you have to wean of it  since body becomes dependent on it. Good Luck and donot worry! Sandy
