Hi Shane,

Thank you for your question. All of the SSRIs are associated with some sexual side effects, but this article from the Mayo Clinic indicates that Paxil may be associated with the most sexual side effects. The article suggests other antidepressants that are associated with the least amount of sexual side effects, including Cymbalta (an SNRI), Remeron (a tricyclic antidepressant), and Wellbutrin (a NDRI). I hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Casey

Hey Shane

This is a question I had asked my doctor too, when considering an anti-depressant.  I remember that she said the Prozac had some of the most sexual side effects.  She also told me that Zoloft was kinda in between and Wellbutrin caused the least.

I am not a doctor and I have also not had any experience with these drugs with the exception of Prozac.

Here is a really good article to read where doctors compare the sexual side effects of the various anti-depressants on the market.

And in this article entitled, APA: Bupropion and Nefazodone Cause Less Sexual Dysfunction Than Other New Generation Antidepressants  they found that:

"In the overall study population, Wellbutrin SR® (bupropion HCl) Sustained-Release was associated with the lowest rate of sexual dysfunction (25 percent) after Wellbutrin® (bupropion HCl) (22 percent), compared with an average of approximately 40 percent across the SSRIs, venlafaxine and mirtazapine."

I hope this helps some.  I am also hoping that people will chime in with their experiences with the different anti-depressants and how it affects their sexual functioning.

Thank you for your question!

I have been on effexor 225mg for over 4 years.  Lately my emotions have been almost out of control at times with yelling and crying. It certainly seems that the Effexor is no longer doing it's job.  Is it possible that I've built up a resistance to it? It has worked in the past.  Could my depression be worsening? Not sure what other med to ask to try .

I could sure use some advice.
