Q: suitable anti-depressants

I have tried many anti-depressants without much success. I have been recently prescribed Nardil, which I cannot start taking for another 3 weeks. I am concerned that this drug will cause me to put on weight and as I am already overweight  do not want to gain any more. Is there an effective anti-depressant that does not cause weight gain?

Thank You

Hi Catherine,

Since you don't mention which medications you've tried in the past, I'm not sure what exactly is left to work with. You can look at this page to learn more about treatment options for depression. Most of the medications belonging to the SSRI class (Zoloft, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro) are weight-neutral, and Prozac has been associated with minor weight loss. Wellbutrin has been associated with both weight loss and gain, so its effects are hard to predict. Effexor, Cymbalta, Desyrel, and Serzone are all thought to be weight neutral as well. I hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Casey

I have been on seveeral different ones which caused me to gain weight.  My Doctor has put me on Celxia which doesn't cause weight gain.  I have never heard of Nardil, but you can search the web to see about the side effects.  I have NO side effects at all with Celxia.  It has really helped me.  I'm on 20mgs.  I hope this helps you out some.
