Q: Why doesn't Paroxetine make a control release product like Paxil does?

My wife gets gas side effects from Paroxetine, but does not from Paxil CR.

Hi Tarantula,

I am going to explain the reason for the lack of paroxetine CR on the market.  Hopefully this will not be too long winded, so try to bear with me.  Paxil (Non-CR) is a brand medication that was put on the market more than a decade ago.  Every brand medication is given a patent life by the government so that they have a certain time to sell their product without competition.  Paxil's patent life ran out several years ago, which allowed numerous generic companies to sell the chemical that is in Paxil (paroxetine).

Okay now on to Paxil CR.  Paxil CR was placed on the market several years after the original Paxil.  Basically what that means is that Paxil CR is still protected under that patent and no company can sell the generic paroxetine CR until that patent life runs out.  Paroxetine CR will most likely be on the market once Paxil CR's patent has expired.  Thanks again for your question and hopefully this helped answer it.
