Q: Can situational depression become clinical depression?

My son contracted a virus which paralyzed his legs and has left him with chronic pain. At first, I believe it was understandably situational depression, but it now seems to have totally taken him over and is more like a clinical depression

I am not an expert, but yes I believe this is very possible.  Clinical depression is a serious mental disorder that significantly affects how a person feels, thinks and acts.  Your son is having to cope with a lot on many different levels.  Does he have a therapist or counselor?  If not, that might help.  It is hard to say more without knowing more about his situation.  But if he has not seen a psychiatrist about his depression, I would say that is the first place to look for help.

I think it easily could. If the situation is constant then you're going to be constantly depressed therefore making you clinically depressed. It's all about the state of mind.

This is definitely a question for a specialist but I do believe it can become clinical. I was diagnosed with depression 5 years ago and, believe me, it was clinical!  But looking back I now believe I was suffering from situational depression long before it got so all-consuming.   To me, if the situation becomes constant for a prolonged period of time it can become clinical if not dealt with.

I believe that a depression (which I believe is nearly always situational in initiation) will worsen until a person has managed to find a resolution to their difficulties...either through mental acceptance and moving forward to a positive future...or through finding closure and moving on to a positive future.

This may mean examining their beliefs and ...what makes them tick...and what needs to be changed to bring about a more positive future.

Sorry...too tired to add more tonight...

Regards.
