Q: My doctor has started me on .5 mg Xanax every 6 hours as needed and also 25 mg Zoloft once a day. I am experiencing things such as crying and chest pains. When should I notice a difference?

I had a little anxiety in December when I needed my tonsils out, but after getting them out I have been fine up until last week. I have good days when I am at work or at ballgames or keeping busy. I am more nervous when at home trying to watch TV or riding in the car. I have other health issues also. I have Crohn's Disease, asthma and allergies and am on the birth control pill. Do you think this is anxiety or due to something other than that?

First of all, how long have you been on the Xanax and Zoloft?  It can take several weeks to a couple of months to feel the full effect or your doctor might decide you need a higher dosage.  Be sure to tell him/her what you are experiencing.  It might very well be anxiety and that the medication hasn't "kicked in" yet, or maybe it's not the right medication for you.  Don't be hesitant to call your doctor and ask what you can expect while on these meds, especially with the other health issues you have.  Ask if any of the other medications you are on could be contributing to anxiety.  Be sure all your doctors are informed of what you are on.

I wish you all the best and let us know if we can be of more help.

I have been on Xanax .25 mg tablets since August. After my surgery in December I have only needed to take 1 tablet at bed. Dr. started me on the .5 mg Xanax tabs and the Zoloft last Thursday. I don't feel that I am extremely bad, but seem to have a harder time in the evenings.
