From what I've read - no, the two work in different ways and belong to two different chemical groups - elavil (amitriptyline) is a tricyclic, and remeron (mirtazapine) is a tetracyclic. Elavil has been around since 1961 and is considered one of the most effective antidepressants. However, as I can say from experience, its most famous side-effect is dry mouth - there are lots of common side effects with most antidepressants and weight gain is also on elavil's list. Remeron also has a good reputation for helping with major depression and is supposed to work well in combination with most of the other antidepressants. It's also supposed to have somewhat less pronounced side effects - though weight gain is not only common, the drug is actually prescribed for this purpose.

I hope you check with a specialist (i.e. a psychiatrist) about these drugs and discuss side effects very carefully. They vary in everyone.

Good luck -

John

That's one you will have to ask your pharmamcist.  But I do know that Remeron is an appetite stimulant and it's easy to gain weight on it.  They don't tell you that part.  My brother kept gaining weight on it and I reminded him the Remeron increases appetite.  He didn't know that.  He was furious that his doctor hadn't mentioned it.

I have a friend who has has great success on Elavil.  Best wishes to you.
