I can't tell you the exact mechanism, but Zoloft is considered an Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor.  Criously, Ultram does the same thing.  It's a dangerous mixture that I was not aware of 4 years that lead to a seizure (seratonin syndrome).  I would not advise mixing the two drugs, or Ultram with any SSRI Class Drug.  The risks are too great.  For more infomation, Google zoloft and ultram.  Or go to http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/ultram-with-zoloft-2221-1474-2057-1348.html.  I hope this helps although it is a bit complicated
