Q: does lexapro make you gain weight

Hi, I have just been prescribed lexapro and people have told me it can make you gain weight.  I too hear it is hard to quit taking is this true. I am worried about starting a drug such as this.  Thanks Karen

Karen,

Weight gain is a POTENTIAL side effect of Lexapro. That doesn't mean that you'll gain weight though. Your body may not react that way to it.

It can be difficult to discontinue many medications.

Why not discuss your concerns with your doctor? That IS part of his or her job.

Good luck,

Teri

I put on a few pounds while on Lexapro (and then on Celexa), but it was only a few pounds on top of my usual 185 (not bad). Also, it was hard to determine whether is was STRICTLY from lexapro/celexa or from improved mood and having more interset in eating.

Also, as far as stopping it (as with any anti-depressant), I wouldn't say it is hard to stop taking it, although you can't stop any anti-depressant SUDDENLY. Due to the buildup of the medication in your system, it should be tapered back down when you stop it, in order to minimize the achiness and grouchiness and other side effects that sudden discontinuation can bring on.

My experience was pretty smooth.
