Q: I have been depressed for a over a year now. I have been on many antidepressants.

lamictol, cymbalta and cytomel and seroquel for sleeping. I have previously been on celexa and lexapro and wellbutrin and still do not feel better. Do I have medication resistant depression?

Hi, Fern,

To me, one of the most difficult aspects of treating depression is that the medications act so differently for different people. That means it can be a trial-and-error process to find what works well for each of us.

I see six medications that you've taken for depression. Did you try all of those in the last year? Sometimes, it can take up to three months (especially with possible dosage changes) to see if a medication is going to wor for us.

Whether your depression would be called "medication-resistant" is really a call that only your doctor can make. Only he knows how long you used each drug, how you reacted to it, and why it was discontinues.

Keep working with your doctor, Fern. You'll get there.

Good luck,

Teri

My mother and best friend have also experience similar experience with multiple antidepressants over the years, most unsuccessful.  They are both taking Effexor right now (different doses), and it's like my mom is a new person with a great outlook.  I'm actually happy to be around her.  Not experienced with this drug myself, but it seems to work great for my friend and mom.  I will warn you that my mom almost quit this drug during the first week.  She feels sick and nauseated.  She removed one of the pills and only took 37 1/2 mg a day for the rest of the week and slowly added the second pill until the symptoms passed.  Talk to your doctor to see if this might be a good option to try.
