Q: which SSRI apart from Prozac [gives me migraine] doesnt cause weight gain and is least addictive

Hi, Having suffered masked depression [Anxiety,Agoraphobia,Social Phobia,Timidity, low self esteem, panic attacks] since a child. ~i was Diagnosed with a slightly Bipolar 2 [?] Theyre not sure!!!  I went on Seroxat, it was a good tablet but after 7yrs I weaned off. Alas 4 months later,~i became v depressed, was put on Efexor XL. The dose kept being upped as my depression became deeper. I felt intuitively that I was, infact, becoming immune and was on such a high dose that I developed very high BP. 165 over 90. I immediately started to titrate down by a dose a month, Im now 5th week of 75mg. Im finding it hard. Im getting very low and slightly agitated,is this withdrawal? whilst on this drug Sex urge went completely, I put on 3stone [Ive always eaten well but try to avoid fattening foods]. I feel that Efexor puts on weight, is v addictive, hard to come off... any suggestions?

Hi Rose

Well you probably know what I am going to say.  You should definitely have this discussion with your doctor.  He or she will understand your history and what meds may work best for you.

I can give you some information about your two criteria however.

I recently wrote an article about weight gain and antidepressants and in my research I found that Wellbutrin was most often recommended if you did not want to gain weight.

Also this article states that Wellbutrin is perhaps the least addictive of any of the antidepressants.

Of course you will always find someone who disputes the research with their personal experience.  Everyone will react differently to any drug.  So basically you won't know until you try the medication for yourself.

I hope this helps!  Thank you for your question.

Good Morning Merely me , I only went into my Home Page now and I see youve posted an answer to my question re: antidepressants that dont put on weight. Many thanks for going to the trouble . Welbrutin obviously goes by a different name here ! We have the same tabs but different names [dont ask me why ! Paxil is Seroxat in UK and Ireland, welbrutin ? I will wait until I see my Professor psychiatrist in August, Im anxious to cross over from Efexor XL, even titrating down from it slowly when Im feeling v well has caused appalling side effects, much worse than Paxil or any other. I will definitely get the Irish name for it coz, ive put on stones with the Efexor, that only makes me feel worse about myself.  Im naturally small boned,  carrying lots of flesh around the middle [espcially when im not eating the wrong foods] is bad for my health and also my depression. tks again, stay well. Rose Kiss
