Q: Will someone help me stop sleeping in so late when I am depressed

this interferes with my work as a substitute teacher. I have Multiple Sclerosis since I was 29, my ID twin sis doesn't and never will. I get depressed because of my Bipolar or my M. S. or what? I need to snap these more common than ever before bouts of depression . They start to become suiicidal thoughts at times...for seemingly no reason.

Hi again Layne

I had written to you previously but let me add a few things...mainly questions.

1.  are you taking any meds which can interfere with your sleep?

2.   are you going to bed at the same time each night?

3.  are you having any MS symptoms which can interfere with your sleep?

4.  what tactics have you tried thus far for getting a good night's sleep and to wake up on time?

You hadn't mentioned the Bipolar before.  I am going to give you the link to our Bipolar site.

I think everything you are dealing with is interfering with you getting good sleep.  What does your doctor say?  I would absolutely recommend you talking to your doctor about how you can help yourself.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

Maybe you need the sleep and that is what your body is telling you in order to help heal. MS is fatiquing and with depression even moreso. I have a rare form of arthritis and just the pain can make me exhausted and when I am, I hurt more and feel more depressed. Maybe you're not getting good sleep at night. Things sound like they are snowballing for you and I feel bad you're trying to fight 2 illnesses that can aggravate each other. When tired and not getting the sleep your body requires could be resulting in the suicidal thoughts. I would suggest really talking to your doctor and telling of your feelings. There may be a good reason behind your fatique. Don't fight it any longer than you have to. I would go ahead and sleep until seeing my Dr. and then go from there but never quit finding a answer because it's bound to come. I wish you better health.

Depression does cause sleep difficulties. The reason is related to the fact that the normal sleep cycle is not followed. You will get a lot of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep ...when you are dreaming...this is not restful sleep and takes a lot of energy. So much so that your brain may run short of certain chemicals and wake you up in the night to make your metabolism produce some more, or prompt you to eat or drinlk something for nourishment...(this is to protect you. However after REM sleep, you are supposed to enter restful deep sleep. The trouble with depression is you can get upto 3 times more unrestful REM sleep and very little deep sleep so you remain tired all the time. It's a natural phenomenon of depression. You can overcome a lot of it by going to bed at the same time each evening and having a bedtime relaxation regime (just as a child would) and then before you go to sleep say to yourself... I can leave any problems I have until tomorrow. I am going to have a restful sleep and I am going to stay asleep until ?O'clock when I will awake fully refreshed and calm and relaxed ready for the next day's activities. If I need to awaken during the night due to a call of nature or an emergency I will do so and be alert and respond in an appropriate manner. Afterwards, when the incident is resolved I shall be able to go back to bed and return to sleep again. See if it helps and let me know if it does... I find it useful. Hypno Reply
