Question

Does medication work better than a natural approach?

I've been fighting depression for almost a year. My depression was caused by problems at work, isolation and loneliness due to be living abroad and a breakup of a serious relationship, all at the same time. This was and is a very deep depression, although still able to function all the joy of life seems to be gone. I've been trying a natural approach (exercise, rest, therapy, etc)  for months and I did get better after few months. However new problems at work and a new breakup have thrown me into a deeper depression. I do not feel I have the energy to face it this time. Do drugs work and if so, do they work faster and better than other approaches?

Thanks

Dear Gati,

There's no simple answer to the question "natural" versus medications. It depens on the type of depression your experiencing and how you react to the approaches.

Have you sought medical attention and been diagnosed? If not, it's time to see someone for some help. You don't have to deal with this all on your own. Start with your family doctor. If he or she isn't comfortable with or able to help you with your depression, he or she can refer you to someone who is.

Good luck,

Teri Robert

Medications can be taken for a short period of time and usually help, for me much more so than any "natural approach" You can talk yourself to death and meds can change your brain chemistry improving your mood.

Why would you go to your regular doctor for advice on depression?? They hand out antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs without the training of a psychiatrist, many people never go to a therapist because its cheaper to see your regular doctor--I question this advice!
