Q: how do you know what is depression and what is ADD in a preteen?

My daughter is 12 will be 13 in November and is really having a hard time focusing on her homework. she is also having a hard time with bullying at school as she is overweight. She gets really overwhelmed with her homework and gets very depressed and hard on herself. I have her set up for a physical with her doctor soon as I want to rule out any physical conditions. She has been in therapy twice - hasn't seemed to help that much. I just don't know what path to pursue - academic or mental health? Are there symptoms that can define one or the other?

Hello

Just wanted to chime in and let you know that Health Central also has an ADHD site to look at.

What do your daughter's teachers say?  Is her lack of focus present at school as well?  I am sorry to hear that your daughter is being bullied.  This can cause anyone to feel depressed and unable to concentrate.

It really is difficult to dissect a person and decide one thing takes priority over another yet I would think that your daughter's mental state can affect everything else including academics.  I would definitely get help from the school as far as the bullying goes.  Does she have any supports or friends outside of school?  Would it be possible for her to have a study buddy or a tutor if need be?

I think you are doing all the right things...it is so hard on a parent to want to help your child but sometimes it is difficult to know what will help the most.

Keep reaching out...there is a lot of support here.

I also have a 12 year old daughter who has just been diagnosed with depression.  We have just started treatment with a therapist as well as on Prozac.  I tried for several months to try and figure out if this was just "normal" pre-teen angst and hormones raging or if this was something more.  We went to the doctor and did full blood test analysis.  I would mention, if you do this, to have them look at the thyroid in the blood analysis.  A test that they do not standardly do is for Hashimoto's Disease which is another type of thyroid dysfunction.  You must request this be tested.  Hashimoto's can cause depression-like symptoms.  My daughter's health and blood tests turned out fine.

For us, the straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that my daughter couldn't get out of bed and started having stomach/nausea problems.  She was unable to get to school for 3 weeks.  The depression finally hit a physical manifestation.  She also started not being able to sleep and/or having long bouts of sleep and also isolated herself in her room and didn't want to go out and do anything.  She often talks about killing herself and thinks that life is meaningless.  In addition, she feels she is at fault, and apologizes often for what is happening.

I know that everyone is very different...and each has a road unto his own.  I hope, by sharing our story, that will help you gage your experience with your daughter.  Pre-teen is not a good time - we all know that.  I think perhaps it is the extremes we must look at and how the kid is dealing with them.
