What about Effector XR 500 mg 2 day does that cause weight gain? Where are the answers to questions

Penny
11/20/08

I have bi-polar mania mostly sometimes with depression, I have been taking EffectorXR 500 mg. 2 times a day for about a year.  I went from 115 lbs. to 140 lbs.  I can't fit into my clothes.  I also take several vitamins my regular doctor prescribed, and take Valtrex and provigil for narcolespy 200 mg. 2 a day,  and I have asthma and take zertrx and abutaal inhaler and  Advair  I also have ADD and tramatic stress syndrome and extreme depression disorder.  Are any of these meds making me gain weight, I already had two bi-pass surgeries, the first one 12 yrs ago, I threw up for 8 yrs, so the doctor sent me to have a different one, and then I had diarrea for two years.  It all stopped now and I feel good, but the weight gain is making me upset because now my new clothes don't fit.

Please see if you can help me.  I go to a psychologist every other week and see the psychiatrist every three months.  I even go to a group support meeting for depression and one for bariatric once a month each.  Thank you. Penny

sunshinebabycuddles@yahoo.com  Altogether I lost 2oo lbs. except for the new weight gain of 25 lbs.

Hi Penny

Are you talking about Effexor?

Health Central has some information you can read about this particular drug here.

Know that I am not a doctor nor have I ever used this medication.  But in researching your question I found a message board where people discuss the weight gain issue and taking effexor.  It seems a mixed bag.  Some people gain weight and some don't.  You can find that discussion here.

I think everyone's metabolism is different and so everyone will respond differently to the meds.  I think the best thing I can tell you is to talk about all this with your doctors.  They are going to know the most about the side effects and be able to treat you accordingly.

I hope you find the med which helps you the most and has the least side effects.

Thank you for your question!
