Q: If I'm allergic to Pristiq am I also likely to be allergic to Effexor?

I broke out in a rash from Pristiq both times I tried it.  I would like to try Effexor as I know people who have done so well with this.  Are they both chemically the same?

nj,

They're not chemically the same, but they are chemically related. Since Pristiq is newer than Effexor, there's nothing about Prestiq in the Effexor prescribing information. However, in the Pristiq prescribing information, one of the contraindictions, reasons to not take Prestiq is:

Hypersensitivity to desvenlafaxine succinate, venlafaxine

hydrochloride (Effexor) or any excipients in the Pristiq formulation

It makes sense that the reverse of this MIGHT be true.

Your doctor or pharmacist would be better able to answer this.

Good luck,

Teri
