Q: What else is there besides pharmaceuticals and “talk” therapy?

I am currently on medication, Effexor and Wellbutrin, and have done "talk" therapy, a lot. I have struggled with my depression since I was a teenager, nearly 30 years. I need to break not only the crisis management cycle but also the general malaise that never leaves me. I have even considered DBS but thought that was too severe.

Have you looked into CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy?

There is a big difference between talking about your problems and learning to change your behaviors. You sound like a person that would use information. You just need to know where to look. Sure there are those that can feel better after talking, but teach a person to see roadsigns and follow instructions and you create a new person. There is a ton of info about CBT on the internet and at bookstores, It would do you a lot of good to learn about it.

I appreciate the answer. I have heard of CBT and even tried the self help section but didn't get much past paying for the book. I am not even sure of how to find a competent practitioner. I don't want someone simply to recommend snapping my wrist with a rubberband when I have negative thoughts.

its great to hear that you understand it. Now get out the phone book and start looking for what you need, and dont settle for a secretary. Talk to people. Ask questions. Get answers.

As I am sure you know that is easier said than done. At this point I am focusing on getting out of bed, showering and taking care of the animals. Not quite to the point of phone books and phone calls. My daughter will return from her grandparents in 3 weeks. I am hoping to have the staying in bed thing under control if not control maybe on a leash or in a cage, something. Then find a job, then hopefully CBT. I appreciate your taking the time to answer again.

if money or insurance are not hindering you, you might take a look at neurofeedback and biofeedback. It's what I would be doing if I could afford it.
