Q: is weight gain a side effect of prozac? i recently switched from effexor to prozac.

I recently switched from effexor to prozac.  I gained in exess of 15 lbs. in a 3 month period and contribute it to the effexor?  Is weight gain a side effect of prozac also?  I have been on prozac in the past and although I havve always had a weight problem, i didn't notice a severe weight gain.  A doctor has informed me that ALL antidepressants have that side effect.  Another doctor told me that in the past, they actually used prozac for weight loss??  I'm confused and gaining weight

I gained alot of weight using prozac.   But I know plenty of people who haven't.  For awhile it was worth the trade-off.  But after almost 45 lbs (5 ft.), it wasn't, my search for the right help that didn't add the weight led to Wellbutrin.   Weight started inching down towards normal almost immediately.    However....I believe I am in the minority....and that MOST people taking prozac DO NOT HAVE that kind of wt gain, if any.   My sister is one.  Mother, too.   Helps..no wt., gain.

also, to other question, yes, prozac can stop working...talk to doctor.  I've seen where adding lexapro or switching to lexapro helps, or they just might up prozac dose.  Good luck
