Q: Does loud voices/noises bother other people so badly?

I've had depression since I was a child. I can't function when family gatherings are taking place. My wife, daughter and friends when they talk it's almost like a physical assault inside my head. I avoid Walmart 'cause it's so loud. They tease me and say I'm too sensitive but I can't deal with the loudness. It just makes me want to run and hide.

Hi Scott

I think a lot of people here can relate.  I know I can.  Loud noises send a shock to my system.

Have you ever heard of Sensory Integration Disorder?  This is when the person has difficulty taking in certain types of sensory stimuli.  For some people who have this...ordinary sounds can be painful.

Have you always experienced this type of sensitivity to sound?  Are any of your other senses affected?  For example, are you sensitive to touch...like the seams of socks or tags in clothing?  Are you sensitive to bright colors or bright lights?

Let us know more and maybe I can research for you...some possible remedies.  You are not "too sensitive"...it is simply a matter of your wiring is different from others.

Thank you for your question.

yes, they do bother me a lot.  I think the noise we hear everyday is so much more than what it used to be one hundred years ago and this has really harmed people.  Electric lawn mowers, leaf blowers, loud car engines, sirens, car alarms, cell phones; it is overwhelming on anyone's senses and some are more sensitive than others.  This is a good quality though, sensitivity in my opinion.
