When we think about depression, the first image that comes to mind is that of sadness.  Yet sadness is only a part of the whole package of depression.  Anger is also a big part of the emotional equation.  And this combination of anger and despair is not only hard on the person who is suffering from depression but certainly on family members as well.  The person may not seem like themselves and this can lead to feelings of helplessness and frustration for those trying to help.

I can tell from your question that you really care about your brother and want to see him happier.  You want to help but you don't know how.  It is sometimes very difficult to reach out to someone in this state but I want to tell you to keep being persistent.  Opening up that dialogue of listening and concern is essential in the beginning.  Try not to place too much pressure on any outcomes of him to feel better right away.  Let your brother know that you care and are there for him no matter what.  Allow him to have his feelings even the angry ones.
