Q: I was put on lexapro for depression and am afraid that i am going to gain more weight

I am afraid that I will gain more weight on this pill. I have already put on 32 pounds since December. Does this pill have a potential to make me gain more weight?

Something to remember about side effects is that they're POTENTIAL side effects. Not everyone experiences them. However, if we start a new medication sure that we're going to have these side effects, we will. It wound't necessarily even be the medication doing it, but the power of our own minds.

All of that said, I just combed through the prescribing information for Lexapro and couldn't find weight gain listed as a potential side effect. In fact, decreased appetite WAS listed.

Hope this helps,

Teri

Hi there

I think Teri is very right in that everyone will react differently to taking a particular antidepressant.

I had actually written a two part article not so long ago about weight gain and antidepressants. And in part two I found research about Lexapro and possible weight gain.  You might want to read my article for the details but it seems the research is mixed on this.  Some patients did not gain weight but I found other literature that said a weight gain of ten pounds or more was possible.

I am thinking that if weight gain is a concern then you might want to discuss this with your doctor and see if there are any steps to prevent this from happening.

Let us know how things go for you.  And thank you for your question.
