Q: Permanent change and the marital strain.

How can I help my spouse understand the permanent changes? Depression has made me into a different person than I was for the first 20 years of our marriage and as much as I'd like to be who I was before, I will never be the same. It's breaking my spouse's heart. Any suggestions?

Hi Jay:

I would assume that you are taking an antidepressant, and if not, why not? If it's not working, then speak with your psychiatrist about finding one that works. With today's medications, there's no excuse not to do something that can help.

The next thing you should definitely do, is seek marital counseling. You can't change how your spouse is feeling about this situation, but a professional can.

You can find one at Psychology Today.

Best of luck,
