I was taking Wellbutrin while I was pregnant for SADD. I had no adverse reactions until one evening without any provocation I started to hyperventilate. I was not under any stress at the time and was reading - sitting down, of all things. I am a yoga practitioner for more than ten years and teach regularily... even while I was pregnant. One thing you learn in yoga is how to breathe. I meditated through the hyperventilation attack for more than an hour trying to regulate and deepen my breathing -- using my diaphram. No luck and once I realized I was losing the CO2 battle, I went to the hospital... they took many tests and when the hyperventilation ended they sent me home (testes showed nothing). the very next night the same thing happened and this time I waited for a few hours at home thinking it would pass like the first time... it did not and by the time we got to the hospital I was having muscle spasms in my hands, arms, and legs seizing. The doctor on site never even came in to see me, but determined I was having a panic attack gave me some meds and sent me home. I called my OB and he determined that I should try to "relax" (lol)
I have a rather relaxing life as is... but okay. So later that day I was taking a nap and the same thing happened, only I was sleeping and have no idea how long before the muscle spasms awoke me. I breathed into a bag and went to the hospital, this time they had me stay over for observation and called in a neurologist... no surprise; nothing to conclude. I asked if it could be the wellbutrin (since it was the only thing I was taking aside for the Prenatal vitamins, and the only change in my lifestyle) He said NO - that it has no such side-effect. Okay...
So, then the next few days I have this happen over and over, and if I was having anxiety it was over the hyperventilation thing -- but I did my best to obey doctors' orders. Finally I am admitted by my OB again and he says he is going to come in and see me... I sit and wait for a couple hours with the nurses on staff hyperventilating and sitting very relaxed... we were all surprised by the strange event -- not normal. I wondered if I were having some kind of spasm to my diaphram (?). But nice of him, he requested that I take some meds to stop the hyperventilation before he arrives... I declined three times but because of such insistence finally gave in, but how was he to determine what was going on without being able to see my state? very annoying, but what can you do? He also thought it was the wellbutrin, but guessed it might have been because of my enlarging belly restricting my breath... similar to my thoughts. I went off and within 3 days the spasms went away. It has now been nearly a year and I have never had another attack.
So -- yes, I think it could be partly from the Wellbutrin. I think that you shoudl be VERY careful to follow medical support in your process to find healing. Also, doctors will give you what meds you ask for, so I would advise keeping personal diagnosos out of your visits and be truly honest with your self about your physical state of health... some are in love with their "diseases" the challenge is that all medications have reactions and side effect -- so when you are taking so many -- particularily some that you are taking cleaning house can take many months and even years to determine if you have a disease or a medication side-effect/ syndrom.
Good luck with your health!
