Q: How does depression and epilepsy fit together?

Smile

I am looking to see if my depression has anything to do with my seizure disorder which started at 14.  I am 44.For 30 yrs I have lived with on and off thoughts of suicide and depression.  It is possible it could all be from the AED's as I can look back and see where it was worse than other times.  Please send me all info on epilepsy and depression that you have.  Thank you- Karen Charles Smile

Hi Karen

It seems from the research that these two do go together.

Here is a report from Science Daily which says:  "Researchers have noted a higher incidence of depression among patients with epilepsy than the general population or others with chronic conditions such as diabetes."

And here is more information from the Epilepsy Foundation

"In general, when standardized methods are used, about 29 percent of people with epilepsy have a major depressive disorder."

So clearly there is something to this.  I have MS myself and I know that with any neurological condition there is a chance that the mood centers of the brain may be affected.  Plus...you are dealing with a very difficult physical condition.  It can be hard to cope.

I hope this helps some.  Thank you for your question.
