Q: what are the reports about taking lamotragine (Lamictal) in conjunction with bupropion and sertraline? I take it as a mood stabilizer and have a diagnosis of major depressive disorder.

Hi there

I am not sure if there is going to be any research or studies on taking this particular combination of medications.  What are your concerns with taking these three together and what does your doctor say?

We can give information about each of these three for you to read in the meantime.

Lamictal is a mood stabilizer and can be used to prevent the extreme mood swings of Bipolar Disorder.  Here is more information about Lamictal.  And here is our page of information about any possible drug interactions with Lamictal.

Here is our information about Zoloft or Sertraline

And here is information about Wellbutrin

Can you tell us how this combination is working for you?  If you need more information please let us know.

Thank you for your question.

I'm not sure what studies might say, but lamotrigine has been a life saver for me. I take it in combination with an MAOI called Emsam (selegiline administered through a 24 hour patch). Emsam affects all three major neurotransmitters associated with depression (serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrin), and your combination of sertraline and buprorpion does the same. This is the only drug regimen that has ever helped relieve my depression over a long period of time. And I've tried all the other classes of antidepressants, and many within each class.

Lamotrigine is one of those drugs used to treat bipolar that is now prescribed as this sort of adjunct treatment with antidepressants. Lithium is used the same way, though when I tried that I felt like I had brain damage and stopped right away. So everyone's reactions differ.

I hope this combination works for you.

John
